Evendale Recreation Commission
April 16, 2009
Called to order at 7:37am
Roll call: Stiney Vonderhaar, David Nichols, John Doviak, Alex Mosley, Wayne Mosley, Michele Gottschlich, Pamela Meyers, Gus Janszen.
Recognition of visitors: Jennifer Shapiro, Lifestyles Essentials
Approval of the minutes: Motion to approve the March minutes made by John Doviak; seconded by Stiney Vonderhaar. Motion approved.
Additions to the agenda: none
New Business:
- Jennifer Shapiro, Lifestyle Essentials
- Open house went very well with approximately 75 people attending.
- 225 people have achieved the Wall of Champions (people who have used the fitness center at least twelve times in the last month)
- Monthly Mini-Challenges were held in February and March
- Members of the Month program continues to be popular. Also added is Member Accolades (members nominated by another member because of their inspiration and dedication) and Nominate a Staff Member (voted on by patrons).
- A blood pressure monitor has been added, and the monitor has already helped at least two patrons detect issues which needed to be addressed with their doctor.
- Upcoming events/programs include a question and answer session with a dietician; a Baseball incentive; and the Evendale 100 program.
- Personal training vs. staff assistance remains confusing for a few people. Again, this issue will be dealt with by David and Jen. Otherwise, a majority of patrons seem quite pleased with Lifestyle Essentials’ management, classes, instructors, and programs.
- Shelter House rental fee will be $60 for resident rentals after January 1, 2010.
- A participation agreement will be implemented.
- A few other policies were tweaked or modified.
- The Policy Guideline is now on the village’s website.
A motion to approve changes was made by Pamela Meyers; seconded by Gus Janszen. Motion approved.
Old Business:
- Comment/Response section has been added. The negative comments continue to decrease as people become more comfortable with LE; and the positive comments continue to increase. One card requested the purchase of tighter dynabands and additional 6-8lb weights. These items have been added at the fitness center. A member asked for a steam room to be added; but this will not happen due to maintenance issues and costs. Also, this amenity had been considered during the fitness center expansion in 2003.
- Trails Pamphlet has been sent to the printer.
Director’s Report:
A. Earth Day
- A copy of the Evendale Trails pamphlet will be in the May edition of the village newsletter. Copies will also be handed out during our Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 25th.
- Earth Day weekend kicks off on Friday the 24th with the Ice Cream Social and Movie Night. Participants are asked to bring a bowl and drink cup so we don’t add to the landfill with foam bowls and plastic cups.
- Saturday the 25th brings in the Earth Day Festival with an indoor yard sale. Representatives from various companies, as well as Gorman Heritage Farm will be here to discuss conservation, recycling and other Earth friendly ideas, programs, and products. In addition to the indoor garage sale, there will be recycling bingo and craft projects for the kids. People who ride their bike or walk to the event can register for a door prize. Families may also bring twenty-five plastic grocery bags or plastic water bottles and receive an Evendale tote bag in exchange. A tree will be planted by the Boys Scouts at the Pavilion in honor of Earth Day 2009, and then the scouts will lead a walk to Griffin Preserve.
- The weekend wraps up with the Fire Department celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Tours and a demonstration will highlight the day. Resident Ed Gassert has brought in his albums for everyone to look at. These albums cover the early days of our fire department.
B. Phi Lambda Pi 50th Anniversary
- Event plans are coming along very nicely. Over 1000 people are now in our database; with over 500 people expected to attend at least part of the anniversary weekend.
C. David has a meeting with SwimSafe Pool Management regarding the pool and outdoor spa new drain covers (Virginia Graeme Baker Act). We are working on getting the new covers installed, and the Hamilton County Health Department is aware of our efforts.
Phi Lambda Pi Report:
- Matt White has replaced Mitch Rupard as a teen advisor.
- The group continues the search for former members.
- Concession Stand staff are being hired and trained.
- The 50th Awards Night and Overnight Party were held on March 21st. A good time was had by all.
- The 2009/2010 Governing Committee has met and begun plans for the upcoming year.
- The younger grades continue to be involved each Wednesday evening; and the committee is working on ways to keep the older members attending and active.
Open Discussion:
- David was asked about our priority listing for fields. Our recreation teams take priority when scheduling the fields. David is aware that Kristen is working with several resident/select teams trying to get everyone practice and play time.
- Pamela expresses her gratitude to the recreation staff for all of their work on the Evendale Trails pamphlet.
Motion to adjourn made at 8:25am by Michele Gottschlich; seconded by Stiney Vonderhaar. Motion approved.
